Transcript:

God: he [Job] could maintain his cause with his friends, but before God, none can es-tablish a plea without condemning God. Wilt thou condemn me &c. God says there is none good, no not one. Again I take Solomon, by God’s gift he had wisdom, yet what did that come to, he could not satisfy his soul: now another example in the New Testament. The Pharasees [sic] were more religious than any of us who call themselves Xtians. Religion was the fashion of the day when Xt was crucified, and he was crucified in order that their religion might be maintained. When any has recd. a sense of Jesus in their helplessness in self, any sign of grace is the acknowledgement that the flesh is grass. Man is a lost and ruined sinner, and if I spend on him all my energies, I still leave him dead in trespasses and sins.
