1 Pet 1 - end. The exceding difficulty in ministering the Gospel, is the ignorance of man. In order to proclaim the rich grace of God, I am obliged to assume that every man is a lost sinner. It is allowed that man requires the interference of God, but the assumption that he is utterly hopeless & helpless is denied. Why Christians have not peace in their souls, is that they do not believe God is looking for nothing in them; they know not therefore their security which is the ground of Xtian action. Now the question is whether man is as bad as God tells him he is; the ?ground of preaching the gospel is all flesh is grass; all the glory of man as the flowers a still more fleeting thing. One really remarkable for righteousness was Job. could anyone here say I eschew evil &c yet what is human righteousness before
